PADI Instructor Orientation Course

The PADI IDC and IOC courses enable you to become a fully qualified PADI Instructor. Equipped with the latest training aids, a pool and the ocean only a few meters away, you will find our facilities amongst the best in the area along with helpful staff to answer your questions. The experience and dedication our staff bring to your training sessions will make you succeed at the IDC, IOC and IE with the least amount of worries, allowing you to focus on becoming a well-trained Instructor ready to enter a competitive market place.If you're already an Instructor with another organization and planning to take the IOC, you may find that you need to take all the modules listed in the IDC schedule. Please drop us a line so we can discuss a schedule that will help achieve your goal in becoming a PADI Instructor.
Course Pre-requisities
To enrol in an IDC course, you must first meet these requirements.
  • Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or hold an Instructor level certification with one of the following recreational Diver Organizations; BSAC - Club Instructor or higher, CMAS - two or three stars, FAUI, IDEA, Los Angeles County, MDEA, NAUI, PDIC, SSI, SAA - Instructor Grade 2 or higher or YMCA (others may qualify - contact PADI or us for verification), or be a diver with proof of certification in diver supervision and management including proof of rescue diving certification.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be fit for diving and submit a medical statement for a diving medical examination which has been conducted within the past 12 months. A licensed physician must sign the form and state that the candidate is fit for diving.
  • Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least sixty open water scuba dives with documentation of experience in navigation, night and deep diving.
  • Submit proof of first aid training with CPR completed within the last 24 months.
  • Submit documentation of any equivalent entry level, advanced, rescue or leadership level certification issued by another recreational diver training organization. (PADI members who have theses records on file at PADI do not need to re-submit).
  • If not a PADI Dive Master, successfuly completed the diver rescue skills assessment section of the PADI Dive Master Course.

What should I bring to the IDC?
  • Three passport sized photos
  • Medical Examination Certificate
  • MFA completed within the last two years ( if not, ask us to get updated! )
  • Log book with evidence of at least sixty dives. (note: for IE 100 logged dives)
  • All certification cards or certificates from Open Water to Divemaster (or equivalent)
  • Tuition fees.
Please let us know before hand if for any reason, you do not have any of the above.
IDC Performance Requirements
To successfully complete a PADI IDC, you must meet the following performance requirements:
  • Attend and participate in all twenty curriculum presentations.
  • Present a minimum of four development teaching presentations and score a 3.5 or higher on at least one presentation.
  • Present a minimum of at least four confined water teaching presentations and score a 3.4 or higher on at least one presentation.
  • Present a minimum of two integrated (two skills each, four total) open water teaching presentations and score a 3.5 or higher on each skill.
  • Demonstrate competence in performing all twenty dive skills listed on the Skill Evaluation. Candidates must earn sixty eight total points, with no individual score below three.
  • Perform a facedown, non stop swim for 800 meters/ 500 yards using a mask, snorkel and fins.
  • Score 75 percent or higher on all five sections of the Instructor pre-assessment exam.

Free Preparation Days
We wish to give you every opportunity to be fully prepared for the upcoming IDC and IE, particularly in the areas of skill development and Instructor level theory. To better prepare for this, we are offering free of charge to all our candidates FREE PREPARATION DAYS. These days will give you the benefit of having one-on-one tuition with a Course Director or Staff Instructor to review any areas where you feel you lack confidence. No pressure or distractions, just plenty of quality time to get comfortable with the material. We will also provide you the opportunity to work with actual students enabling you to fine tune your teaching skills. Below is a sample of what material will be discussed but feel free to let us know if there are any areas you would like us to cover.
  • Dive Theory review, questions and answer session.
  • Pool session, review of the twenty skills. Tanks and weights provided free.
  • Review of modules from Open Water Course or sections of the Instructor manual.
  • Review of General Standards and Procedures.
  • Rescue demonstration.
  • Review of all PADI videos.
  • Academic presentation and confined water evaluation. * AI's only.
 

PADI Instructor Assistant Instructor Course

PADI Assistant Instructors are diving educators who are able to assist with, organise and supervise classroom and water sessions in partnership with PADI Instructors, as well conduct some diving and non-diving specialties; a valuable component of the diving world.

To enroll in the

Assistant Instructor Course

you must first be certified as a

PADI Divemaster

or hold an Instructor level certification with one of the following recreational diver organizations:

BSAC

Club Instructor or higher,

two or three star,

MDEA, NAUI, PDIC, SSI, SAA

Assistant Instructor requirements:

To be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor, which you will accomplish easily under the guidance of our skilled course directors and staff instructors, you must meet the following performance requirements:
  • Attend the seven IDC Curriculum Components including:
    • Course orientation
    • Learning, instruction and the PADI system
    • PADI discover scuba and snorkeling programs
    • Developing knowledge development presentations
    • Teaching project AWARE and peak performance buoyancy specialties
    • Teaching in confined water
    • Conducting open water training presentations
  • Present a minimum of two knowledge development teaching presentations and score a 3.5 or higher on at least one presentation.
  • Present a minimum of two confined water teaching presentations and score a 3.4 or higher on at least one presentation.
  • Present at least one integrated (two skills) evaluated open water teaching presentation and score a 3.5 or higher on each skill.
  • Demonstrate competence in performing all twenty dive skills listed on the skill evaluation. Candidates must earn a total of sixty-eight points, with no individual score below that.
  • Score 75 percent or higher on the assistant instructor standards exam and have any missed questions reviewed until mastery is achieved. Scores less than 75 percent require a retest, of which there is only one offered per course.
Remember as an Assistant Instructor you can:
  • Conduct the academic presentation for any PADI diver course under the indirect supervision of an instructor.
  • Teach and certify PADI peak performance buoyancy divers under the direction of a PADI instructor.
  • Teach and certify students the Discover scuba experience (pool only).
  • Teach and certify student in PADI Medic fist Aid (after completion of an MFA instructor course).
  • Teach and certify student in a non-diving specialties, such as the Equipment specialty, Peak Performance Buoyancy.

Open Water Scuba Instructor Course

Open Water Scuba Instructor Course

To qualify to enter the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor course, you must;

  1. Be certified as a PADI Assistant instructor or be an instructor in good standing with another training organization for at least six months.
  2. Have completed and logged at least 60 dives as documented by your logbook including night, deep and navigation dives.
  3. Be at least 18 years old at the start of Divemaster training.
  4. Submit medical clearance for diving signed by a doctor, confirming fitness to dive. The medical clearance must be current within the previous 12 months.
  5. Have proof of CPR training within the last 24 months.
  6. Be certified as EFR Instructor.

Emergency First Responder Instructor

Emergency First Responder (EFR) courses

It is now a requirement that all new OWSI's must also be EFR instructors for adults and children.
During this course we build on your skill as an Emergency Responder and focus on developing your abilities to teach these skills to others. The Instructor course provides you with the additional training necessary to teach the Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR), Secondary Care (First Aid) and Care for Children courses.

The instructor course covers specific goals and performance requirements for the Primary Care, Secondary Care and Care for Children courses, along with instruction on how to structure learning, the requirements of performance-based training, and your role as the instructor in the learning environment. You also learn how to motivate students, evaluate student knowledge, present course content effectively, become proficient in developing students' hands-on skills practice sessions, and are taught how to present an effective scenario-based learning experience.

Prerequisites

You must be 18 years old and have completed adult, child and infant CPR and first aid training in the past 24 months or a be a practicing medical professional such as a physician, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic and Registered Nurse.

Emergency First Response Instructor Crossover Course (1 Day)

Individuals who are current CPR/First Aid instructors with another qualifying organisation may choose to earn the Emergency First Response Instructor rating by completing the Emergency First Response Instructor Crossover course. This course gives credit for past teaching experience.

Prerequisites

The Emergency First Response Crossover course is open to all CPR/First Aid Instructors who hold current adult, child and infant CPR/First Aid teaching credentials from another CPR/First Aid training organization.

Refresher Course

Is it time to refresh your CPR and first aid skills? Do you hold a CPR or First Aid card from another training organization? If so, you are eligible to attend the Emergency First Response Refresher course. Plus, you can get Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training at the same time you refresh your CPR skills.

PADI Instructor Instructor Exams

Instructor Exams

are conducted by PADI Instructor Examiners sent from PADI International ...or Local Area Offices (in our case PADI SE Asia in Australia).

The IE is a two day evaluation program that tests you, the instructor Candidate in your
teaching ability, dive theory knowledge, water-skill level, understanding of the PADI System, altitude & professionalism. IEs typically start the evening before the dates stated on the program schedule with an Orientation and one of the theory exams. Full details will be given when enrolling. Please contact us if the dates of our programs do not suit you.

To attend an IE you must:

  • Successfully complete an OWSI program or IDC within 12 months from start date of
    the IE.
  • Have documentation of at least 100 logged dives including experience in navigation,
    night and deep diving.
  • Present an Instructor Certificate of Completion that has both the OWSI IDC completion
    date and dive experience sections signed by a PADI Course Director, OR present an IE
    Certificate of Participation indicating previous attendance at an IE showing which mod-
    ules need to be repeated.
  • Present an IE Enrolment form and appropriate IE fee.
  • Present a medical statement for a diving medical examination which has been conducted within the past 12 months indicating that the candidate is fit for diving.
An Instructor candidate who is unsuccessful at an IE must wait at least five days before attending another IE. If unsuccessful at a second IE, the instructor candidate must attend the appropriate components of another OWSI program or IDC (as directed by PADI) with a PADI Course Director , before attending another IE.  It's recommended that instructor candidates are registered for an IE with PADI several weeks in advance. This allows for better planning of staff and logistical needs.

Areas of Evaluation and Examination Policy

To successfully complete an IE, an individual must:
  • Score 75 percent or higher on all five sections of the dive theory exam.
    Only one makeup on one of the sections is allowed.
  • Score 75 percent or higher on the Systems, Standards and Procedures exam.
    No makeups are allowed.
  • Score a 3.5 or higher on an assigned Knowledge Development teaching presentation.
    One makeup presentation is allowed - passing makeup score must be 3.5 or higher.
  • Score a 3.4 or higher on an assigned Confined Water teaching presentation.
    One makeup presentation is allowed - passing makeup score must be 3.4 or higher.
  • Score an average of 3.5 or higher on two assigned Open Water teaching presentations, No makeups are allowed.
  • Demonstrate competence in the rescue of a scuba diving victim simulating
    unconscious / non breathing at the surface. One makeup is allowed.
  • Score a 3.0 or higher on five skill demonstrations. In addition, score a total of 17 points or more on the entire skill circuit. One makeup of all five skills is allowed only if one skill demonstration is less than 3.0 or less than 17 total points is scored. Passing makeup score must be 3.0 or higher on each skill demonstration with no less than 17 total points.
    Scores of 1.0 or 2.0 on two or more skills initially or not passing the makeup will
    disqualify candidates from certification during the IE.
  • Demonstrate competence of all dive skills during Confined Water and Open Water sessions.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior, attitude and actions during all phases of the IE.

Written Examination Policy
